The Spitfire was never meant for the sea. The Seafire was the Navy's answer to that problem — a carrier-based adaptation of the most capable fighter in the RAF's arsenal, squeezed onto a flight deck and flown by pilots with nerves of steel.

Its undercarriage was too delicate for deck landings. Its visibility over the nose was poor. It bounced, swung, and bit back. And yet the men who flew it adored it, because when it was airborne, it was still a Spitfire — and nothing in the sky could touch it.
