Where It Begins
Every brand has an origin story. My great-grandfather, John Jackson, served as an RAF engineer during the Second World War with D Section, No. 1 Base Aircraft Repair Unit operating across North Africa and Italy. He was one of the men behind the scenes: repairing, rebuilding, and keeping aircraft operational under relentless pressure in conditions most people never had to face. The pilots flew them. Engineers like John made sure they flew again. Though I only know fragments of his story, his skill, dedication, and quiet resilience shaped my respect for engineering, craftsmanship and ultimately, for the machines he kept in the air.
Founded By Carl
Spitfire Clothing was founded by Carl, a British Parachute Regiment veteran with a tour of Afghanistan and a lifelong obsession with warbird aviation. The brand didn't start as a business plan. It started as a personal project rooted in family history, military service, and a genuine frustration at the lack of heritage apparel that felt authentic rather than manufactured. I didn't want to sell a t-shirt. I wanted to make something my great-grandfather would have recognised as worthy of the machines he worked on. That commitment to authenticity to earning the right to use these names, these markings, these histories is what separates Spitfire Clothing from licensed merchandise and generic warbird print products.
What Spitfire Clothing Is
The Supermarine Spitfire stands as our emblem not because it is the most famous British aircraft of the war, but because it represents something harder to manufacture than aircraft: British engineering at its finest. Elegant, aggressive, and relentlessly effective. Every garment Spitfire Clothing produces is rooted in that same mindset: purposeful, hard-wearing, and authentic. We draw directly from WWII warbird engineering, combat history, and the culture of the men and women who flew and maintained these aircraft. Nothing is invented. Everything is earned.
